POEMS AND SONGS:

“Summertime”

by Pauline C. Peck

The sun and I get up each day,

Blinking webs of sleep away;

We tuck the moon and stars in bed

And whisper softly, “Sleepyhead.”

And then the sun climbs in the sky,

All whipped cream clouds on lemon pie,

While I enjoy each tasty bite

Until it’s time to say, “Goodnight!”

“Summer’s Here”

by Helen H. Moore

Summer’s here!

Another year

Of school is at an end.

We’ve learned a lot

And grown a lot

And made a lot of friends.

We’ll say good-bye,

Now summer’s here,

It’s time for us to part.

But we’ll remember all our friends

And keep them in our hearts.

“Firefly Hi”

by Helen H. Moore

What’s that

In the summer evening sky?

Again it goes!

Fly-flashing by!

It’s here, it’s there, it’s…

A firefly!

Blinking against the darkening sky

Is just his way of saying, “Hi,”

To another firefly.

“Bright Sun Shining Down”

(“Row Your Boat” tune)

Bright sun shining down,

Shining on the ground.

What a lovely face you have,

Yellow, big, and round!

“Good Morning. Ms. Sun”

Good morning, Ms. Sun.

We’re so happy our day’s begun.

Your bright rays chase away the gray

So we can have some fun.

Good morning, Ms. Sun.

We hope that you won’t run.

We hope you’ll stay so we can play

Outside in the warm, bright sun.

Sing Raffi's "Mr. Sun".

"Three Little Fishies"

Down in the meadow in an itty, bitty pool,

Swam three little fishies and a momma fishie too.

"Swim," said the momma fishie, "Swim if you can."

And they swam and they swam all over the dam!

Boop boop, dittern dattum, whattem chu (3X)

And they swam and they swama ll over the dam.

"On Top of My Ice Cream"

On top of my ice cream, all covered with sauce,

I lost my poor gumdrop when somebody coughed.

It rolled off the table and on to the floor,

And then my poor gumdrop rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden and under a bush,

And then my poor gumdrop was nothing but mush.

Oh, the mush was all sticky, a stsicky could be,

And early next summer, it grew into a tree.

Oh, the tree was all covered with beautiful moss,

It grew yummy gumdrops in butterscotch sauce.

So if you eta ice cream all covered with sauce,

Hold on to your gumdrop and don't ever cough!

"Five Green Speckled Frogs"

Five green speckled frogs, sitting on a speckled log,

Eating a most delicious bug, yum, yum!

One jumped into the pool,

Where it was nice and cool,

Then there were four green speckled frogs,

Croak, croak!

...repeat until no frogs are left

MATH:

1.    Graphing-

    1. Graph favorite summer time activity.

    2. Graph favorite ice cream flavor.

2. Patterning- Make and laminate color popsicles. Children create color patterns using them.

3. Counting-

1.Put icecream scoops in numerical order

according  to the number written on them

atop a cone. Patterns can be found at

      http://www.firstschool.ws/activities/crafts/colors/icecreamcone2.htm

      2. Put the correct number of seeds on

each watermelon pattern according to the

        number written on it.

SCIENCE:

1.    Sunburn Experiment- Attach paper clothes to paper doll with tape. Leave doll in sun. After a few hours, take doll in and remove clothes. Ask why skin is “lighter” where the clothes were. Ask what will protect us from getting a sunburn.

2.    Make lemonade.

3.    Make "Sunshine Twister"- Mix orange juice, pineapple juice, and icecubes.

4. Make "frozen fireballs"- Pour orange juice in ice cube tray. Place one maraschino cherry in each compartment when orange juice is halfway frozen.

ART:

1. Handprint Summer Sun- Children trace four handprints on yellow paper and cut out. Glue handprints around a yellow circle to represent sun rays. Draw a face on the sun.

2. Paper Plate Sun- Child paints both sides of plate yellow. Cut out yellow and orange rays and glue around rim of plate.

3. Handprint Ice Cream Cone- Children trace and cut out handprint. Glue on top of ice cream cone pattern to represent scoop. Make cherry using red pom pom or red fingerprint.

2. Paper Plate Watermelon- Cut plate in half and paint red. Paint top edge green. When dry, glue on real watermelon seeds or paint seeds with black paint.

4.Swirly Suns- Give each child a paper to fingerpaint with yellow and orange paint. When dry, draw a sun shape with rays and have child cut out.
