POEMS AND SONGS:

“Ladybugs”

By Maria Fleming

Ladybugs all dressed in red

Strolling through the flowerbed-

If I were tiny just like you

I’d creep among the flowers too.

"Five Little Ladybugs"

Five little ladybugs climbing up a door,

One flew away and then there were four.

Four little ladybugs sitting on a tree,

One flew away and then there were three.

Three little ladybugs landed on a shoe,

One flew away and then there were two.

Two little ladybugs looking for some fun,

One flew away and then there was one.

One little ladybug sitting in the sun,

She flew away and then there were none.

"Spiders"
Spider (child's name) went out to play
On a spider web one day.
She had such enormous fun,
She asked one more spider to come.

Spider (child's name) went out to play...(continue)

"The Spider"
Watch the busy spider
He's helpful as can be.
Eating insects all day long.
Now they won't bite me!

"The Itsy Bitsy Spider"
The itsy bitsy spider
Climbed up the waterspout.
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out.
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again.

"The Fuzzy Caterpillar"

The fuzzy caterpillar crawled upon a leaf,

Spun her little chrysalis,

And then fell fast asleep.

While she was sleeping,

She dreamed that she could fly.

And later when she woke up

She was a butterfly!

“What do Caterpillars Do?”

By Aileen Fisher

What do caterpillars do?

Nothing much but chew and chew.

What do caterpillars know?

Nothing much but how to grow.

They just eat what by and by

Will make them be a butterfly.

But that is more than I can do

However much I chew and chew.

"Caterpillar Song"

I started as a tiny egg

Upon a leaf of green.

And now I stay upon the leaf

So I will not be seen.

Soon I'll build a chrysalis

Upon a limb up high.

I'll stay a while and then come out

And be a butterfly.

"Ladybug"

The ladybug's a beetle.

It's shaped like half a pea.

Its color is a bright red

With lots of spots to see.

Although the name is "ladybug"

Some ladybugs are "men".

So why don't we say "gentleman bug"

Every now and then?

"Five Little Ladybugs"

Five little ladybugs climbing on some plants

Eating the aphids, but not the ants.

The first one said, "Save some aphids for me."

The second one said, "They're as tasty as can be!"

The third one said, "Oh, they're almost gone!"

The fourth one said, "Then we'd better move on."

The fifth one said, "Come on, let's fly!"

So they opened up their wings

And they flew through the sky.

"I'm a Little Honeybee"

("I'm a Little Teapot" tune)

I'm a little honeybee

Yellow and black.

See me gather

Pollen on my back.

What the queen bee tells me

I must do

So I can make sweet honey for you!

"The Beehive"

Here is the beehive.

(make a fist)

Where are the bees?

Hidden inside

Where nobody sees.

Here they come buzzing

Out the hive.

(slowly open fist)

One, two, three,

Four, and five!

(hold up five fingers)

"Baby Bumblebee"

Buzz, buzz!

(clap hands)

I'm bringing home my baby bumblebee.

Won't my mother be so proud of me?

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee.

Oh, he stung me!

...swishing up my baby bumblebee (rub hands together)...yuck, he's all over me!

...washing up my baby bumblebee (pretend to wash)...look, I'm all clean!

"Firefly"

by Meish Gold

Firefly, firefly,

How you glow!
Under your body

You light up below!

Firefly, firefly,

Wow, how you shine!
At night in the dark

I can see you just fine!

"Ants in Your Pants"

Ants in your hat? Imagine that!
Ants in your shirt? Oh, does it hurt?

Ants in your sweater? It could be better.

Ants in your sock? How do you walk?

Ants in your shoe? Oh no, poor you!

Ants in your pants? Get up and dance!

WRITING:

Journals- What is your favorite insect?

"Butterfly Travels" Class Book- "If I was a butterfly, I would fly to______________."

MATH:

Patterning- Create color patterns using butterfly

cut-outs.

Estimation- Estimate how many bug counters are in a jar.

Graphing- Graph class' favorite bug.

Symmetry- Children demonstrate symmetry by creating a symmetrical pattern on a butterflies wings using pattern blocks.

Counting-

1. Place the correct number of spots

chips) on each ladybug according to the

number on its back.

2. Place the correct number of bees on each hive according to the number on the hive.

3. "Picka Peck of Pollen" (Mailbox Magazine)- Create construction paper flowers and laminate. Place pollen (bingo chips) in the center of each flower. Child rolls a die, reads the number, and collects that many pieces of pollen from his flower.Game continues until all pollen has been collected.

Addition and Subtraction- Solve problems using bug

counters.

SCIENCE:

1.Paper Plate Life Cycle of a Butterfly- Pre-draw a line going across and down the center of a paper plate with a black marker. Label each section egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. Glue orzo pasta or lima bean on a paper leaf in egg section. Glue rotini on paper leaf in caterpillar section. Glue shell pasta in chrysalis section. Glue bowtie pasta in butterfly section. (I dye my pasta using food coloring and rubbing alcohol beforehand.)

2. Ants on a Log Snack- Coat the top of a celery stick with peanut butter and lay raisins ("ants") on it.

3. Bug Hunt and Observation- Go on a bug hunt around the school. Place bugs in a bug finder and observe.

4. Match insects to their homes on pocketchart.

    Bee-hive

    Caterpillar- chrysalis

    Ant- anthill

    Mosquito- pond

     Worm- dirt

5. Make "Worms in Mud" Snack- make chocolate pudding and mix in gummy worms.

6. Pollination Demonstration- Prepare 2 large flowers and place on floor. Sprinkle pollen (sequins) on one flower. Explain to class that bees collect pollen as they travel from flower to flower to get nectar. Demonstrate by using a bee puppet with holes cut out in it for your fingers. "Fly" bee to first flower to gather pollen. When bee lands, hold some sequins in your fingers. "Fly" bee to next flower and deposit sequins on that flower. Explain the pollen makes it possible for the flower to grow.

7. Put life cycle of a butterfly cards in sequential order.

ART:

1. Blotto Butterfly- Children cut out butterfly pattern and place a few spoonfuls of various colored paint on it. Fold butterfly in half and then reopen. Paint will mix to make a beautiful design.

2. Coffee Filter Butterfly- Watercolor a coffee filter. When dry, pinch closed so sides fan out and tie with pipecleaner. Form antennae using top of pipecleaner.

3. Wax Paper Butterfly- Shave crayons and place between two sheets of wax paper. Iron for a few seconds so that crayon shavings melt. When cool, draw a butterfly on wax paper usinga  Sharpie marker. Students cuts out butterfly pattern.

4. Pointilism Butterfly- Child cuts out a butterfly pattern and paints dots on it using a q-tip.

5. Egg Carton Butterfly- Child colors butterfly pattern and then glues three sections of an egg carton in the center of the pattern. Add pipe cleaner antennae.

6. "Marble-ous Bees"- Cut yellow construction paper into the shape of a bee. Place in pan and roll marbles over it, covering it with stripes of black paint. When dry, cut out wax paper wings. Bend black pipecleaner into antennae and tape to back of bee's head.

7. Class Caterpillar- Each students decorates a paper plate with markers and various art material for caterpillar's body. Add paper plate head.
